The History of Flight Murals capture the rich history of aviation at Sand Point Magnuson from the period 1919 – 1970. I designed the murals based on extensive research of aircraft and in a bold graphic style based on the vibrant color palette of the “Collage Découpée” or “Cut Outs” of the famous French artist Henri Matisse. Drawings were enlarged on large primed MDO panels and then painted during the summer of 2021 with 30 local teens from both Magnuson Park residence and nearby neighborhoods. The series of murals were installed in chronological order over all of the windows on Building 41, a former naval gas station.
The murals serve as both a valuable teaching tool about the history of aviation at Magnuson Park, as well as a protection from vandalism for a former historical building. Teens involved in the project learned about the wide range of aircraft and the stories behind their significance. In addition, the project empowered students to feel part of their community by working on a collaborative public art project that enhances the visual environment of Magnuson Park.
This project would not have been possible without the generous help of many outstanding volunteers including: Mark Preuss, Dave Seaman, Diane Hofbeck, Hailey Orr, Niela Klinghoffer, and Gabri Wessel.
